A quote on a yellow background appears to the right of Cory: "This inviting, heartfelt story will get readers into the groove of self-expression and lasting friendships." FREESTYLE has its very first review, and it’s a star from Kirkus!

I’m over the moon about this! The review highlights a lot of aspects of the book I was hoping people would enjoy, and I’ll be writing “superb cartooning instincts” on a post-it for my rainy day wall for sure. I’m especially glad they called out K Czap’s incredible color work!!

In other news, I just returned from a very refreshing summer beach trip (my first in a decade, somehow, and our first with a child!). I’m glad to have had some time to play, catch up with family, and noodle in my sketchbook. Now I’m all excited to get back to the next book…!

What I’ve been reading lately:

What Did You Eat Yesterday? by Fumi Yoshinaga

Antique Bakery and Flower of Life, also by Yoshinaga, were formative manga for me in high school. The way she lets characters’ inner lives slowly unfold with humor, warmth, and a sense of nostalgic melancholy is so striking, I could reread them forever.

What Did You Eat Yesterday? is one of her more recent series (which I’d been having a bit of trouble keeping up with – but I was delighted to find it available through my library app! Thank you, libraries!). It’s a slice-of-life story about the day-to-day lives of a middle-aged gay couple. You learn more about the characters, their relationships, and their daily cooking adventures, as there’s a recipe in every chapter! I haven’t made anything yet, but am screencapping with vigor for future use. It’s a relaxing read that I’d recommend without reservation.
